Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge: - Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist,
camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari
Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to
take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering
reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the
crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of
ancient, liana-hung trees.
Situated on the eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, in the volcanic highlands of Tanzania, covering an area of some 240 square kilometers and perched on the rim of the collapsed volcano, is the Ngorongoro Crater, a world heritage site, often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. It has the most magnificent views over the crater floor, which is home to vast herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, the rare and endangered black rhino, elephant, cheetah, leopard, lion and herds of gazelle and wildebeest. Its position on the Eastern rim allows the most spectacular and uninterrupted views of the sunset.
The lodge is located 170 km from Arusha, approximately 4 hours drive and 40 minutes by air, with another 45 minutes transfer from the airstrip to the lodge.
Set high on the saddle of tree-clad ridge commanding panoramic views over
the endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti, the Serengeti Serena
Safari Lodge is the ultimate fusion of traditional African architecture and world-class
style. Drawing its inspiration from the circular ‘Rondavel’ dwellings and winding paths of a
traditional Maasai village, the Lodge features thickly-thatched, stone-built rooms,
spaciously set amongst groves of indigenous trees that are cooled by sparkling streams and
papyrus-fringed ponds.
Nestled in the acacia woodland on the edge of the escarpment overlooking the plains of the south-western Serengeti National Park, one of the most famous parks in the world, and host to the largest and most spectacular annual migration of the wildebeest.
Standing high on the bluff of a bush-cloaked ridge, commanding panoramic views over the
endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti National Park, Kirawira Camp
is the epitome of colonially-styled safari luxury. The most exclusive of the Serena Group’s
many Safari venues, the exquisite Kirawira tented camp is the epitome of classic safari camp
luxury and a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group.
Designed in typically Edwardian style, it features an elegant central meeting tent evocatively furnished with a tasteful selection of chintz-covered chaises longues, jewel-hued Persian rugs, antique escritoires, wind-up phonograms, leather-bound travelling cases, brass shooting sticks, carved rocking chairs, and stud-backed smoking chairs.
Primal calm, rugged splendour; A place of infinite calm surrounded by untamed majesty, Mbuzi Mawe offers a timeless blend of classical safari rusticity and the world-class professionalism of Serena Safari Lodges, Resorts and Hotels.
Scenically located in a glade guarded by 3 million year old granite towers, Mbuzi Mawe (meaning Klipspringer in English) makes maximum use of its unique wilderness location. Unlike any other camp, Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp lies at the epicenter of the Serengeti within easy reach of the prime wildlife theatres of Lobo, the Western Corridor of the Grumeti River, the southern grass plains, the Seronera Valley and the kopjes, or inselbergs, of Barafu, Gol, Maasai, Loliondo, Simba and Moru.
Standing high on the bluff of a dramatic ochre and terracotta streaked cliff
above the flamingo-frosted expanse of Lake Manyara’s gleaming alkaline waters, the Lodge
commands panoramic views across the volcano-studded floor of the Great Rift
Valley.
Set high on a bush-cloaked hill, embraced by arcing vistas and washed by a sea of richly rolling grasslands, it stands centre-stage to one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife arenas and has a ringside seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth, the legendary migration of the wildebeest. And secreted deep within the Masai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Serena Safari Lodge is the ultimate safari destination.
Designed to reflect the brilliance of Lake Manyara’s unique birdlife, the Lodge draws on an inspirational architectural motif that melds swooping avian curves with the gentle concentric patterns of traditional Maasai ‘Bomas’ (encampments) whilst the vibrantly coloured frescoes lining the walls are designed to depict the colourful intricacy of bird migratory patterns. The lodge features individual rooms, each with their own balcony and view of eternity, a sky-blue swimming pool and a spectacular restaurant, overlooking a water hole where a fantasia of creatures collect to drink.
Hidden among the kopjes, lies Tarangire Sopa Lodge, surrounded by ancient baobab trees. It is the home of the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa, and other game including the elusive leopard. Over 400 bird species can be spotted here as well. With water constantly available in the area, the greenery is lush providing a wonderful contrast to the burnt ground.
The lodge lies 118 km south west of Arusha, in the Tarangire National Park which covers an area of 2800 sq km and approximately 2 hours drive from Arusha town and 20 mins flying time with another 20 mins transfer time to the lodge.
This is widely considered to be one of the finest lodges in
Africa, with its unique blend of timeless safari elegance combining with the rigours of a
genuine bush adventure. The Selous Reserve is Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary, the size
of Switzerland but with only around 3,000 people in it at any one time. Which makes staying
at Sand Rivers even more amazing, you are miles away from anywhere and anyone! Being an easy
1 hour flight from Dar Es Salaam a safari in the Selous is an ideal combination with the
coast.
Sand Rivers is also famous for its Fly Camping, camping out with just a
mosquito net between you and the African stars. This incredible experience isn’t for faint
hearted as you could easily have a hippo brush past your net or an elephant wander through
the camp. When we where camping an ele decided to raid the kitchen and they do make quite a
noise trying to open a metal cool box on a tree trunk.
The location of the camp is probably the first thing you notice, set on a bend of the mighty Rufiji River the camp’s eight open fronted cottages have expansive verandas, and stunning views across the water. Even the camp’s pool has magnificent views out over the river and therefore the perfect place to wile away the heat of the day.
Secreted in the depths of a tree-shaded coffee plantation, wreathed in multi-coloured trees of tumbling bougainvillea, cooled by mountain streams and strung like a necklace around the shores of an idyllic wooded lake, Mountain Village offers a haven of calm and serenity just outside the hustle and bustle of Arusha, Tanzania’s premier ‘Safari Town’.
Nestling in the heart of a coffee plantation on the shores of Lake Duluti, Mountain Village is the perfect place to relax before or after experiencing the adventure of a Serena Safari.
