The Mara experience
has remained the once-in-a-lifetime dream of safari lovers ever since the days when hunters
thronged the region in search of the ultimate black-maned lion trophy. Natural home to the
“Big 5” game, a safari to Kenya cannot be said to be complete without it.
During the months of August to November, thousands of visitors get down to the Maasai Mara to witness one of the most spectacular phenomena on earth. Stretching as far as the eye can see, a teeming mass of zebra, wildebeest, and topi, trailed by scavengers make way into the Mara plains from the Serengeti, in what is known as the Great Migration.
The only ‘tree hotel’ ever to be built on the slopes of Kenya’s legendary Mount Kenya, Mountain Lodge offers a matchless game viewing opportunity whilst combining a glorious panorama of mountain vistas with the primordial splendours of an ancient rainforest.
Floating 2,195 m high on the flanks of Kenya’s highest mountain and secreted deep within her largest forest reserve, the lodge offers not only the champagne-clarity of mountain air, the tranquility of the forest and a colourful cavalcade of wildlife but also the chance of scaling the icy peaks of Africa’s second-highest mountain.
The Salt
Lick Lodge is a unique lodge built atop stilts overlooking a waterhole. It is linked by
suspended walkways under which elephants potter. Its name is taken from its setting - a
natural salt lick which was a congregating place for the Taita Hills Sanctuary's many
animal species.
Framed against the glorious backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain, the
magnificently beautiful Mount Kilimanjaro, surrounded by miles of rolling grasslands,
patrolled by vast herds of elephant, shaded by the lush, feathered-green of an acacia grove
and hugging the banks of a gently flowing river, this very traditional yet supremely
luxurious lodge is the safari destination of a lifetime.
Naivasha is a
Masai name given to the area denoting the characteristics of the lake including size and its
tendency to roughness when windy. Located 90 minutes away from Nairobi by road, Naivasha has
long been the place for those seeking to get away from it all. Joy Adamson, author of Born
Free made the shores her home, so did Lord Errol and a host of other well-known
personalities. At 1880m above sea level, the air is cool, crisp and reinvigorating.
Beautifully
set on Kenya's North Coast beach, it boasts of being amongst the favorite deluxe resorts on
the East African Coast. It has the longest beach front of white sandy beaches, 338 rooms
ranging from the refreshing standard rooms to the grand presidential suites.
Lapped by
the waters of Lake Victoria, shaded by giant fig trees, and lost to the world, Mfangano
Island Camp is an oasis of tranquillity, an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of
modern life. The island has just one road and no other hotels to disturb the peace. The only
way to reach Mfangano Island is by light aircraft, an adventure in itself. You land on a
dusty airstrip, then it’s a short ride by speedboat to the camp.
