Drive through the residential area of Langata towards the Ngong Hills to Karen Blixen’s home, now a museum. Take a walk through the house and gardens. Kazuri started as a small ceramic workshop experimenting in making hand made beads and has now grown to a big factory. Its workforce comprises of destitute single mothers and unemployed school leavers whose self respect has been restored and is apparent in their confidence and appearance. In addition on bead work they also make pottery reflecting African colors and that have made Kazuri famous worldwide with these unique Kenyan style pottery. The items are available for sale.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a small flexible charity, established in memory of David Sheldrick, famous Naturalist and founder Warden of Kenya's giant Tsavo East National Park in which he served from 1948 until 1976.
This orphanage is home to orphan baby Elephants and is open daily from 1100 - 1200 hours during feeding time. One is able to watch the orphans as they are brought out to feed and sometimes can participate in feeding them. There is no set entrance fee but a small donation is expected to help sustain the Elephants.
Helping save the lives of orphaned Elephants and Rhinos who are ultimately released back into the wild is just some of the many wildlife commitments The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is involved in. The Trust runs seven full time Desnaring teams, two mobile Veterinary Units, and is active in a Community Outreach Program along with working with the communities in an educational capactiry locally, and through articles for the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, the Press and Radio Programs. The Trust has also provided advanced training in wildlife management for promising students.
The tour covers the modern city centre, the parliament buildings, the Railway Museum and the National Museum where there are spellbinding displays of early man, tribal regalia and the flora and fauna of Kenya. The Tour also includes a visit to the adjacent Snake Park.
The centre has a nature of approximately 145 acres which offers home to the endangered Rothschild Giraffes which move beautifully camouflaged and often emerges out gracefully and gently to meet their visitors. This is the only place in the world where visitors experience the wonders of seeing, touching and feeding the Giraffes.
If you want to face with a lion in the outskirts of a large city, you will have no better opportunity than in the Nairobi National Park. You can set off early in the morning for a bush safari and the same evening enjoy the asphalt jungle of the city. This relatively small park is particularly popular with visitors just arrived in Kenya and eager to gain their first impression. With a bit of luck you might even see a black rhinoceros.
The park is located within the city limits if Nairobi. Lion, rhino and a great variety of plains game can all be found within the borders of the park.
